Mr. Orville Birchfield, age 88 of Wellington in Menifee County, Kentucky, departed this life Monday, April, 28, 2008 at the Edgewood Estates in Frenchburg, Kentucky after a brief illness.
He was born February 11, 1920 in Pomeroyton, Kentucky, to the late Sam and Ida Ratliff Birchfield.
In addition to his parents, Orville was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Edith Ratliff Birchfield, four sisters: Edna Campbell; Della Lawson; Tilda Moore and Grace Duncil, and two brothers: Ottis Birchfield and Ray Carl Birchfield.
Survivors include 4 Children; William Orville & Regina Birchfield of Wellington, Kentucky; Pamela & Claudell Nickell of Ezel, Kentucky; Robert Scott & Wendy Birchfield of Lexington,Kentucky and Mark & Wanda Birchfield of Wellington, Kentucky; 1 Brother; Thomas Kelly Birchfield of Kettering, Ohio. Also surviving is 11 Grandchildren & 7 Great-Grandchildren.
Orville served in the Army for 3-1/2 years during World War II in the 79th Infantry Division as a medic. After the war, Orville and Edith lived in Ohio until 1958 when they returned to Menifee County to operate a general store and Orville was the Postmaster at the Wellington Post Office for twenty-eight years.
In 1961, Orville became a member of the Ezel United Presbyterian Church serving several years as an Elder.
Orville was a member of the Menifee County Fiscal Court Health Services Council; served on the boards of Menifee County Farm Bureau; Menifee County Fire Department; Menifee Medical Center and the Edgewood Estates nursing home. He also served as a board member of the Mountain Rural Telephone Coop. from 1971 until 2007.
Funeral Services will be conducted 1:00 pm Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the Ezel United Presbyterian Church in Ezel, Kentucky with Pastor Emily Boyce & Danny Birchfield officiating. Visitation after 12:00 noon Thursday at the Church. Interment will follow with Burial in the Ezel Cemetery in Ezel, Kentucky. Visitation will begin after 6:00 pm Wednesday at Menifee Home For Funerals in Frenchburg, Kentucky.
Pallbearers: Benny Ledford, Curt Ledford, Philip Lawson, David Lawson, Josh Birchfield and Sam Birchfield.
Military Graveside Services will be conducted by the Morgan County D.A.V
In lieu of flowers, Donations are suggested to the Resident Activity Fund at Edgewood Estates in Frenchburg, Kentucky.
